Lets face it -  Sex is important.

Not only is the drive for sex imprinted in our DNA, the emotional, physical, and spiritual fulfillment that is experienced in healthy sexuality is to be savored. Sexual issue are much more common than one might expect, and their causes can be elusive without a therapist. They do not seem to go away on their own. Once physiological issues have been removed from the equation, by checking in with a physician, we can focus on what might be impeding the patients sex life. Exploring the clients view of sex, sexual experiences past and present, and the quality of their relationships gives us a better understanding of the level of intimacy that is present. Negative experiences from the past, and attitude toward sex need to be explored as well. We are then able to explore what happy and healthy sexuality might mean to the client, and see how this might be able to be cultivated within the relationship.

Common issues

  • Low Sexual Desire
  • Fears about Sex
  • Sexual compulsion and Sex Addiction
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Sexuality and Gender Issues

Low Sexual Desire

A lack of sexual desire is not as uncommon as many people may be led to believe. The libido refers to the desire for sexual activity or sexual drive and varies from one person to the next. There is no one specific standard that can be issued for the level of  sexual desire and not only do desires vary among individuals, but the same person can have a varied sexual desire throughout their life span. There are a number of factors that contribute to these variations in sexual desire, including stress, mood disorders, inter-relational issues, low self-esteem, body image issues, hormonal issues, and a myriad of other factors. We will work with you on addressing what might be preventing you from experiencing a healthy libido.

Sexual Compulsion and Sexual Addiction - Compulsive avoidance

We are presently living in a time, and a society where dysfunction has unfortunately become the norm. Compulsive sex (sometimes labeled as “sex addiction”), and compulsively avoidant sex are two of the most common issues that our offices address. Technology and modern society’s view on sex have facilitated a groundswell in addictive use of pornography, dating sites, prostitution, and compulsively avoidant sex. In many cases a “shame cycle” develops which perpetuates a pattern of sex which leaves people unhappy, and increasingly unfulfilled.

We have extensive experience in this area. With proper motivation to follow  suggestions, we have seen our clients move beyond the despair of compulsive sex, into a contented sex life which they had not imagined might be possible.

Erectile Dysfunction

Nearly 40% of men have struggled with erectile dysfunction at some point or another, by the age of 40. The most common symptoms of erectile dysfunctrion are:

  • Difficulty getting an erection
  • Difficulty maintaining an erection
  • Reduced interest in sexual activity
  • Low self-esteem
After ruling out physiological causes of E.D. with a physician, we can work with patients on psychological factors which are far more common. These include stress, depression, guilt, low body image, relationship issues, sleep disorders, anxiety (including performance anxiety) and compulsive use of pornography.

Sexuality and Gender Issues

Humans are sexual beings. Some of us are oriented toward the opposite gender, others toward our own gender, and many more to both genders.

At Sound Mind Miami we offer services for people experiencing a wide variety of concerns related to sexual orientation and gender identity. Our aim is to provide a safe environment to enrich and empower our clients with a more loving and accepting understanding of their own sexual self, and gender identity.
